A Hanok is a classic Korean house, characterized by its traditional wooden frame construction. These structures historically served various purposes, including as palaces, temples, and residences. The style of a Hanok varied based on the owner’s social standing, featuring tiled roofs (giwa-jip), thatched roofs (choga-jip), or wooden roofs (neowa-jip). The giwa-jip, or tiled-roof house, is the most widely recognized and iconic representation of this architectural style.
These Hanok houses have been built consistently from the Joseon dynasty through to modern times. Today, even in bustling metropolises like Seoul, which has a population exceeding 10 million, thousands of these distinctive tiled-roof Hanok residences can still be found.
