Unbeknownst to many new players, a single enchantment can transform your mining experience from a tedious chore into a lightning-fast excavation: Efficiency V. This coveted enchantment drastically increases the speed at which you can break blocks with tools, and for axes, it even provides a bonus chance to stun an enemy’s shield. Acquiring Efficiency V can be approached through several distinct methods, each with its own strategic considerations and levels of reliability.

Enchanting Table

The classic enchanting table is often the first method players consider for acquiring enchantments. To maximize your chances of obtaining high-level enchantments like Efficiency V, you must surround the enchanting table with precisely 15 bookshelves, placed one block away from the table, and at the same level or one block higher. This setup allows you to access level 30 enchantments, which are essential for the possibility of Efficiency V.

When you place a compatible tool – such as a wooden, iron, gold, or netherite pickaxe, shovel, or axe – into the enchanting table interface along with some Lapis Lazuli, you will be presented with three enchantment options. These options are randomized, and there’s a chance one of them might be Efficiency V directly, or a lower level like Efficiency IV. For tools made of wood, iron, gold, and netherite, Efficiency V is a possible direct outcome from the enchanting table.

Pros: This method is a direct way to apply the enchantment to your tool. If luck is on your side, you can get Efficiency V in a single attempt, saving time and resources compared to combining lower-level enchantments. It’s a fundamental part of early to mid-game progression for tool enhancement.

Cons: The primary drawback is the sheer randomness involved. There’s no guarantee that Efficiency V will appear as an option, and you might have to enchant many items or “reroll” enchantments by enchanting low-cost items until Efficiency V appears. Crucially, stone and diamond tools are limited to a maximum of Efficiency IV when enchanting directly at a table. To get Efficiency V on these tools, you’ll need to use an anvil to combine enchantments later.

Stats: Requires a full setup of 15 bookshelves to unlock the highest enchantment levels. Each attempt consumes experience levels (up to 30) and 1 to 3 pieces of Lapis Lazuli, depending on the enchantment option chosen.

Anvil (Combining Enchantments)

The anvil is an indispensable tool for advanced enchantment management, offering a reliable path to Efficiency V, especially for tools that cannot receive it directly from an enchanting table. This method involves combining two items that possess the same enchantment to create a single item with a higher level of that enchantment.

To obtain Efficiency V using an anvil, you typically need two items enchanted with Efficiency IV. These items can be two Efficiency IV enchanted tools (e.g., two Efficiency IV pickaxes) or, more commonly and flexibly, two Efficiency IV enchanted books. By placing both Efficiency IV components into the anvil’s interface, they will combine into a single Efficiency V item (either a tool or an enchanted book). Once you have an Efficiency V enchanted book, you can then apply it to any compatible tool on the anvil.

This method is particularly vital for diamond and stone tools, as they can only receive Efficiency IV from an enchanting table. By enchanting two diamond pickaxes with Efficiency IV and then combining them on an anvil, you can finally achieve a Diamond Pickaxe with Efficiency V. The same principle applies to any tool you wish to upgrade.

Pros: This is arguably the most reliable and guaranteed method to achieve Efficiency V once you have acquired the necessary Efficiency IV components. It bypasses the randomness of the enchanting table for the final step and is the only way to get Efficiency V on stone and diamond tools through direct application of enchantments to the tool itself. Using enchanted books offers maximum flexibility, allowing you to store the enchantment for later use on any tool.

Cons: The main challenge lies in first acquiring two separate Efficiency IV enchantments. This can be time-consuming, requiring multiple enchanting table attempts or trading sessions. The process of combining enchantments on an anvil also costs experience points, with higher-level enchantments and multiple applications leading to escalating costs. If the combined item becomes “too expensive,” it cannot be enchanted further.

Stats: Combines two lower-level enchantments to create one higher-level enchantment (e.g., two Efficiency IV items yield one Efficiency V item). Anvil operations consume experience levels, with the cost increasing based on the enchantment level and prior work done on the items.

Villager Trading (Librarians)

Librarian villagers, identifiable by their lectern job block, are an excellent renewable source of enchanted books, including the highly sought-after Efficiency V. This method relies on manipulating villager trades to get the desired enchantment.

When a villager becomes a librarian, they generate a set of trades. One of these trades can be an enchanted book. If the initial trades don’t include Efficiency V, you can break the lectern, wait for the villager to become unemployed, and then replace the lectern. This “resets” their profession and their trades, allowing you to cycle through different enchanted book offers until Efficiency V appears. This process can be repeated until you find a librarian offering an Efficiency V book. Once found, trading with them once will “lock in” their trades, making the Efficiency V book a repeatable offer.

Further optimizing this method involves curing a zombie villager. Zombie villagers, when cured, offer significant discounts on their trades. A cured librarian might offer an Efficiency V book for as little as one emerald, making it an incredibly cost-effective and renewable source of the enchantment.

Pros: Once a villager offers an Efficiency V book trade and it’s locked in, you have a renewable and potentially very cheap source of the enchantment. This allows for equipping multiple tools or creating backups. Curing zombie villagers can drastically reduce the emerald cost, making it highly efficient in the long run.

Cons: Finding a villager that offers Efficiency V can be extremely time-consuming and relies heavily on luck and patience. Cycling through trades can take many attempts. The initial price for an Efficiency V book can also be quite high (many emeralds) before any discounts are applied, requiring a significant emerald farm or trading infrastructure.

Stats: The chance of a newly generated librarian offering Efficiency V is relatively low. Repeated breaking and placing of the lectern is necessary to “reroll” trades. Discounts from curing zombie villagers can reduce prices significantly.

Loot Chests

For the adventurous explorer, enchanted books, including those with Efficiency V, can sometimes be discovered within loot chests scattered across various generated structures in the Minecraft world. These structures include formidable End Cities, dangerous Bastion Remnants, desert temples, jungle temples, dungeons, strongholds, and more.

Finding enchanted books in loot chests is a passive benefit of exploration. As you venture through the game world, uncovering new areas and raiding structures, you might stumble upon an Efficiency V book without specifically seeking it out. These books can then be applied to your tools using an anvil, providing a valuable upgrade without direct experience or Lapis Lazuli expenditure.

Pros: This method can provide high-level enchantments, including Efficiency V, without directly expending player resources like experience levels or Lapis Lazuli. The only “cost” is the time and effort spent exploring and navigating dangerous structures. It’s a bonus for players who enjoy exploration and discovery.

Cons: This method is entirely dependent on luck and extensive exploration. There is no reliable way to specifically target Efficiency V through loot chests; it’s a completely random drop. The chances of finding a specific high-level enchantment like Efficiency V are generally low, making it an unreliable primary strategy for acquiring the enchantment.

Stats: The probability of finding specific enchanted books, and especially high-level ones like Efficiency V, varies greatly by structure and chest type. It is a random chance and not a guaranteed outcome.

Fishing

Fishing, while often pursued for food or unique treasures, also offers a very minor chance to reel in enchanted books, some of which might contain the Efficiency enchantment, potentially even at higher levels such as V.

When fishing, in addition to raw fish, you can catch “treasure” items, which include enchanted books. The type and level of enchantment on these books are entirely random. While it’s technically possible to fish up an Efficiency V book, the probability is exceedingly low, making it more of a happy accident than a viable strategy.

Pros: Fishing can be a relatively passive activity, allowing you to acquire resources and potentially enchanted books while engaging in other tasks or simply waiting. It doesn’t require complex setups or dangerous exploration.

Cons: The chances of obtaining a specific high-level enchantment like Efficiency V through fishing are incredibly remote. It is by far the least efficient and most unreliable method for targeting this specific enchantment. Relying on fishing for Efficiency V would be an exercise in extreme patience with very little payoff.

Stats: The overall probability for specific high-level enchantments from fishing is very low, making it an inefficient primary method for acquiring Efficiency V.

Ultimately, a combination of these methods often yields the best results. Setting up a villager trading hall for renewable books, alongside using an enchanting table for initial enchantments and an anvil for combining, forms a robust strategy for acquiring Efficiency V and other powerful enchantments.
