The random effect can be anything out of the 32 different effects in Minecraft. The effects last 60 seconds so whenever one effect is over, another random one will appear. Since the effect is completely random, it can kill you out of nowhere but the opposite can also happen. Helpful effects such as Fire Resistance, Regeneration can be a lifesaver in many situations.
