This Minecraft tutorial explains the Snowy Plains biome (formerly called Snowy Tundra or Ice Plains) with screenshots.

In Minecraft, you will spawn into worlds with unique weather, animals, and plants. These regions are known as biomes. Let’s explore the Snowy Plains biome in Minecraft.

Background

In Minecraft, the Snowy Plains is a biome in the Overworld. It is relatively flat land with a layer of snow covering the grass. It has lots of streams, lakes, caves, and some wildlife such as polar bears and rabbits.

Let’s explore the characteristics of the Snowy Plains biome.

Weather

The weather in the Snowy Plains biome has average precipitation (but instead of rain drops, this biome has snow flakes).

Trees

In the Snowy Plains biome, you will find spruce trees:

Other Standard Blocks

Mobs

In the Plains biome, there is some wildlife. You will find polar bears and rabbits.

Overworld Mobs that Spawn at Night

You will still find the usual Overworld mobs that spawn at night in the Plains biome, such as creepers, endermen, skeletons, spiders, witches and zombies:

Villages

If you look carefully in the Snowy Plains biome, you will sometimes find a village like the one below:

Inside this village, you will find a group of small buildings where villagers naturally spawn. You can trade with these villagers to get rare items. Because this type of village is in a snow biome, you generally will not find any gardens to harvest if the entire village is covered in snow.

Igloos

If you look carefully in the Snowy Plains biome, you will sometimes find a rare igloo like the one below:

An igloo is a house made out of blocks of snow. Inside the igloo, you will find a bed, a crafting table, a furnace and a redstone torch.

If you are very lucky, some igloos (not all) have a secret basement. Learn more about igloos and how to discover all of their hidden secrets.
