List of all Minecraft structures and where to find them
Only three structures in all of Minecraft are absolutely essential to “completing” the game’s main storyline. Yet, the world is brimming with dozens more, each offering unique challenges, valuable resources, or fascinating lore. Navigating this blocky expanse requires knowing what to look for and where to find it. From dangerous dungeons to resource-rich ruins, understanding these generated features is key to survival and progression.
Here is a comprehensive list of Minecraft’s diverse structures across its three dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether, and the End, detailing their key characteristics and what they offer.
Ancient City
Deep within the Deep Dark biome at Y-level -51, Ancient Cities are vast, eerie structures built from deepslate and sculk. They offer unique treasures like the Swift Sneak enchantment, exclusive music discs, and valuable enchanted books. However, these cities are guarded by sculk shriekers that summon the formidable Warden, demanding extreme stealth and careful preparation to navigate their low-light corridors. Location: Deep Dark biome, Y-level -51. Key Loot: Swift Sneak enchantment, unique music discs, enchanted books. Main Threat: Warden.

Bastion Remnant
These large, ruined fortresses of blackstone and basalt are found throughout the Nether, remnants of an ancient Piglin civilization. They come in four variants, each potentially holding some of the game’s most valuable loot, including Netherite upgrade smithing templates, the Pigstep music disc, and gold blocks. Bastions are fiercely defended by hostile Piglins and Piglin Brutes, requiring significant combat preparation. Location: All Nether biomes except Basalt Deltas. Key Loot: Netherite upgrade smithing templates, Pigstep music disc, gold, ancient debris. Main Threat: Piglins, Piglin Brutes, Hoglins.
End City
Massive, skyscraper-like structures of end stone bricks and purpur blocks, End Cities are found on the outer islands of the End dimension. They are a prime source of high-tier loot, including enchanted diamond armor and weapons, Shulker Shells, and most notably, the Elytra (found on End Ships). Reaching them requires defeating the Ender Dragon, and their traversal is made challenging by the void and levitation-inflicting Shulkers. Location: Outer islands of the End dimension. Key Loot: Elytra, Dragon Heads, Shulker Shells, enchanted diamond gear. Main Threat: Shulkers.
Ocean Monument
These large, pyramid-like structures of prismarine blocks rest on the seafloor in deep ocean biomes. Ocean Monuments contain valuable resources like gold blocks, sponges (unobtainable elsewhere), and sea lanterns. They are guarded by Guardians and Elder Guardians, which inflict Mining Fatigue III and shoot lasers, making exploration difficult without water breathing and enchanted gear. Location: Deep ocean and deep frozen ocean biomes. Key Loot: Gold blocks, sponges, prismarine. Main Threat: Guardians, Elder Guardians.
Stronghold
An essential, maze-like underground fortress in the Overworld, the Stronghold’s primary function is to house the End Portal Room, the sole gateway to the End dimension. It contains various rooms, including libraries with enchanted books. While crucial for game progression, Strongholds can be difficult to locate and navigate, often teeming with hostile mobs due to low light levels and Silverfish. Location: Underground in Overworld biomes. Key Loot: Enchanted books, End Portal. Main Threat: Hostile Overworld mobs, Silverfish.
Trial Chambers
These newly discovered underground structures are combat-focused dungeons, built from copper and tuff bricks. They feature trial spawners that challenge players with waves of mobs, offering valuable rewards from vaults opened with Trial Keys. Trial Chambers are the only place to encounter the Breeze mob and obtain Breeze Rods for crafting the Mace. They are designed for intense combat and can be very dangerous. Location: Underground in the Overworld (Y-20 to Y-40). Key Loot: Trial Keys, Breeze Rods, rare vault items. Main Threat: Breeze, various trial mobs.
Woodland Mansion
A massive, dark-oak themed mansion found in Dark Forest biomes, the Woodland Mansion is one of the game’s rarest structures. It’s the only natural source of the Totem of Undying (dropped by Evokers) and contains chests with various loot. Inhabited by dangerous Illager mobs like Vindicators and Evokers, and often thousands of blocks from spawn, finding and clearing one is a significant undertaking. Location: Dark Forest biomes. Key Loot: Totem of Undying, various chest loot. Main Threat: Vindicators, Evokers.
Ocean Ruins (Underwater Ruins)
Deteriorated structures scattered across ocean floors, Ocean Ruins come in cold (stone bricks) and warm (sandstone) variants. They contain loot chests with items like enchanted books and buried treasure maps. Warm ocean ruins are also the only place to find Sniffer eggs within suspicious sand. They are sometimes guarded by Drowned and can be partially buried. Location: All Ocean biomes. Key Loot: Enchanted books, buried treasure maps, Sniffer eggs (warm variant). Main Threat: Drowned.
Abandoned Mineshaft
Large, complex underground tunnel systems of wooden planks and fences, often featuring incomplete rail systems. Mineshafts are a good source of early-game resources like wood, rails, and chest minecarts. They are also the only natural source of Cave Spider spawners, making them dangerous due to poisonous attacks and other hostile mobs in low light. Location: Underground in most Overworld biomes. Key Loot: Rails, wood, chest minecarts, basic resources. Main Threat: Cave Spiders, other hostile mobs.
Dungeon
Small, often 5×5 or 7×7 block rooms found underground, identifiable by cobblestone and mossy cobblestone. Dungeons always contain a monster spawner (Zombies, Skeletons, or Spiders) and up to two chests, making them excellent for mob XP farms and early-game loot like saddles or music discs. They constantly spawn hostile mobs, posing a threat to unprepared players. Location: Randomly underground in Overworld biomes. Key Loot: Mob drops, saddles, music discs. Main Threat: Spawner mobs.
Igloo
Small, dome-shaped structures of snow and ice found in cold biomes. Some Igloos have a secret basement containing a villager and a zombie villager, offering early-game villager curing and trading opportunities, along with a chest of basic loot. Normal Igloos offer minimal resources beyond snow and ice. Location: Ice Plains (Snowy Plains), Cold Taiga (Snowy Taiga) biomes. Key Loot: Villager curing setup (basement), basic chest loot. Main Threat: Zombie Villager (basement).
Pillager Outpost
Tall, tower-like structures inhabited by Pillagers and their captains, often with cages nearby containing Allays or Iron Golems. Outposts are a source of the “Bad Omen” status effect (from killing a captain), which initiates village raids. They provide crossbows and emeralds, but are populated by dangerous Pillagers who attack on sight, making the area hazardous. Location: Various Overworld biomes, often near villages. Key Loot: Crossbows, emeralds, Allays. Main Threat: Pillagers, Pillager Captains.
Ruined Portal
Partial, damaged Nether Portals constructed from obsidian and crying obsidian, found in both the Overworld and the Nether. They provide early access to obsidian and crying obsidian, otherwise difficult to obtain, and contain a chest with useful Nether-related loot like golden tools, flint and steel, or fire charges. They can sometimes generate in dangerous areas. Location: All Overworld and Nether biomes. Key Loot: Obsidian, crying obsidian, Nether-related items. Main Threat: Surrounding hostile mobs.
Shipwreck
Broken-down ship structures found in ocean and beach biomes. Shipwrecks often contain loot chests, including treasure maps that lead to buried treasure, and basic resources like wood or wool. They can be partially buried or underwater, requiring careful exploration, and may be guarded by Drowned. Location: Beaches and all Ocean biomes. Key Loot: Buried treasure maps, basic resources. Main Threat: Drowned.
Desert Pyramid (Desert Temple)
Distinct pyramid-shaped sandstone structures in desert biomes, containing a hidden treasure room beneath the central block. Desert Pyramids are an excellent source of valuable early-game loot, including diamonds, gold, iron, emeralds, and enchanted books. Be wary of the trapped treasure room, which uses a pressure plate connected to TNT, requiring careful disarming. Location: Desert biomes. Key Loot: Diamonds, gold, iron, emeralds, enchanted books. Main Threat: TNT trap.
Jungle Temple
Mossy cobblestone structures covered in vines, found deep within jungle biomes. Jungle Temples feature puzzles involving tripwires and levers, leading to loot chests with valuable items like diamonds and emeralds. They are trapped with tripwires connected to arrow-shooting dispensers, demanding careful navigation, and can be difficult to locate due to dense foliage. Location: Jungle biomes. Key Loot: Diamonds, emeralds, gold. Main Threat: Arrow traps.
Swamp Hut (Witch Hut)
Small, wooden huts with a cauldron and crafting table, found exclusively in swamp biomes. Swamp Huts are a guaranteed spawn point for a Witch and a Black Cat, making them ideal for creating Witch farms for potion ingredients. The hut itself offers minimal loot, and Witches are hostile and can be challenging opponents. Location: Swamp biomes. Key Loot: Witch drops (potion ingredients). Main Threat: Witch.
Villages
Collections of various buildings inhabited by Villagers and protected by Iron Golems, found in several Overworld biomes. Villages are crucial for trading a wide variety of items, including enchanted books and tools, and provide a safe haven and sources of food. They can be attacked by zombies or raided by Pillagers, but their trading potential is invaluable. Location: Plains, Savanna, Taiga, Desert, Snowy Plains biomes. Key Loot: Trade items, chest loot (blacksmith). Main Threat: Zombies, Pillagers.
Nether Fortress
Large, castle-like structures of nether brick, found throughout the Nether dimension. Nether Fortresses are the primary source of Nether Wart (essential for potion brewing), Blaze Rods (for Eyes of Ender), and Wither Skeleton Skulls (for summoning the Wither). They are inhabited by dangerous Blazes, Wither Skeletons, and Zombified Piglins, with Blaze spawners making certain areas particularly hazardous. Location: Nether dimension. Key Loot: Nether Wart, Blaze Rods, Wither Skeleton Skulls. Main Threat: Blazes, Wither Skeletons.
Nether Fossil
Large bone structures made of bone blocks, sometimes containing a single magma block, resembling skeletons of ancient Nether creatures. Nether Fossils serve as a good source of bone blocks, which can be crafted into bone meal for accelerating plant growth. They offer no unique loot or significant challenge beyond their material value. Location: Underground in various Nether biomes. Key Loot: Bone blocks. Main Threat: None.
End Ship
Often found alongside End Cities, the End Ship is a flying structure of end stone bricks and purpur blocks. It is the only legitimate source of the highly sought-after Elytra and a Dragon Head, found in its treasure room. Guarded by Shulkers, reaching and looting an End Ship typically involves navigating perilous gaps between End islands. Location: Next to End Cities on outer End islands. Key Loot: Elytra, Dragon Head. Main Threat: Shulkers.
Minecraft’s structures are integral to the game’s exploration, progression, and resource acquisition. These features are not “installed” in the traditional sense but are automatically generated as part of the world creation process. Each structure has specific generation rules tied to biomes, dimensions, and Y-levels, making the hunt for certain structures a core part of the Minecraft experience. Mastering the art of finding and conquering these locations is fundamental to uncovering all the game has to offer.
